Last night, I got a text from my friend saying that she got an invite from a friend to Sean Kingston's birthday party at a club in Hollywood. Sean. Kingston's. Birthday. Like for real?! I was so excited, that was a once in a lifetime type of thing to happen, and we weren't missing that. So me and my roommate got all dressed up, put on heels, did our hair and makeup, and went to the club. There was a total of 9 girls in our group. Two of the girls were black, two were "latina", and the rest were all white (you'll see why that's relevant later).
When we got to the club, we were waiting in line with the guy who got us the invite, and his boss comes over and pulls him aside. When he came back over he says he has bad news. Now, to be honest our first thought was that we weren't going to be able to get in because we were under 21. But it was for an entirely different reason. He tells us that his boss told him that that the two black girls, and the short latina girl (my roommate) can't come in, but the rest of us can. We were shocked. He said he didn't know why, but he couldn't do anything about it so it was up to all of us on whether or not the rest of us wanted to go in. So, after a lot of discussion it was decided that those three girls, and two other girls out of the group would leave and go home and the rest of us (4 girls) would stay because this was a once in a lifetime thing.
Once the rest of my group got in to the club, I got to the door, the bouncer looked at me, and sent me outside the barrier again. So I text my friend, to try and figure out what was going on, and she responded that I was not allowed in for the same reasons as the other girls were earlier.
So, after a long story short, only three out of the nine girls that came were allowed in, and those three girls were all tall, skinny, white, and blonde. Me and four other girls were not let in the club because we were either "Latina looking" or black and we didn't fit the "image" of the club.
I never thought that I would be the target of racism or discrimination but I was last night, and it was the worst feeling in the world. And to see the looks on the other girl's faces when they were sent away was horrible. The main purpose of this post is to raise more awareness about the fact that racism is still a huge deal in our society and culture today and that it could happen to anyone at any time.
Thank you so much for reading this post, and for bearing with me as I rant about this subject. I promise my next post will be a lot more fun haha. So as always thank you for checking out my blog and I'll talk to you next time. peace.
